Oral and maxillofacial surgery requires 4 to 6 additional years of hospital based surgical and anesthesia training. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Smith manages a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions. Dr. Smith practices a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from complex facial or oral pathology to corrective jaw surgery and wisdom tooth removal. He can also diagnose and treat salivary gland disorders, facial injuries, and performs a full range of dental implant and bone grafting procedures.
Dr. Smith's staff is specially trained in assisting with these anesthetic options within our state of the art office setting:
- Intravenous (IV) sedation
- Nitrous oxide/Oxygen (laughing gas) with local anesthesia
- Local anesthesia alone
Patients are continuously monitored during and after surgery. Some of our patients are treated at our local hospital, The Memorial Hospital, under general anesthesia. This is determined by Dr. Smith after reviewing a patients medical history and determining the type of oral surgical procedures that are required to treat their problem.
